
Early in 1949, MGM celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary with a star-studded party. Judy sat near Clark Gable, the man who had helped launch her career. He leaned over and said, “Goddamn brat. You’ve ruined every one of my birthdays. They bring you out of the wallpaper to sing that song, and it’s a pain in the ass.” She later reflected, “I’ve only begun to like him today, now that he’s leveled with me.”
